The reserve, which consists of two separate parts, is located in the Sherabad and Termez districts of the Surkhandarya region.
The total area is 24554 hectares, most of the reserve is located at an altitude of 3157 meters above sea level in the southwestern spurs of the Gissar ridge. Currently, more than 130 species of birds, over 25 species of mammals, 27 species of reptiles, 2 species of fish and amphibians are registered in the Surkhan Reserve. Among them: Transcaspian marinka, green toad, steppe turtle, steppe agama, Turkestan and Caucasian agama, desert and Alai golgaz, quick lizard, fast and black-eyed lizard, water and eared snake, patterned snake, arrow snake, Central Asian cobra , gyurza, carpets shtomordnik, small horseshoe, Asian broadtail, dwarf bat, blond arrow eagle, tolai hare, wolf, fox, weasel, stone marten, badger, lynx, steppe cat, wild boar, horned goat, Asian mouflon, black stork, black vulture, golden eagle, burial eagle, hawk, desert partridge, partridge, etc.).
17 species of animals live on the territory of the reserve and the protected zone, which are included in the Red Data Books of IUCN and Uzbekistan. In total, 827 species of vascular plants have been identified in the reserve, of which 41 are rare species (prickly almond, cotoneaster, dog rose, ephedra, etc.)
The area of the reserve is 24583 hectares, located at an altitude of 1000 m to 2500 m above sea level.
It employs about 60 people.
