The village of Gilan is located in the Kitab district of the Kashkadarya region, 80 kilometers from the city of Shakhrisabz, on the border of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and is one of the highest mountain villages in Uzbekistan.
The village of Gilan is surrounded on all sides by high mountains reaching over 4000 meters in the east. More than 5 thousand people live in the village. The population of the village has preserved the ancient rituals, customs and way of life. According to local residents, people settled in the village in the middle of the 13th century. Gilan is amazing because it is located at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. In the vicinity of the village, there are practically no flat and flat areas of land, the slope of the meta sometimes reaches 40 graluses. Therefore, the population of the village cultivates potato fields on the mountain slopes practically by hand. In doing so, they use bulls and donkeys. Local people grow fruit on steep slopes and river gorges. There are many orchards here. The irrigation system, which was built by the local population, is considered a special pride here. The most famous mountain potato in Uzbekistan grows here.
Walking in the center of the village you can see exotic built old houses and narrow alleys. Surprisingly, in two-story houses, the second floor is residential and the first floor is used for keeping livestock, which is similar in architecture to Tibet and the highlands of Nepal. It should be noted that this is the only such place in Uzbekistan.
Here tourists can socialize and get acquainted with the way of life of local residents. Walking along the picturesque surroundings of the village and neighboring villages like Kul, Sarchashma will allow you to learn the way of life of the population. Near the village of Gilan, at an altitude of 4080 meters above sea level, there is the holy mountain Khazret-Sultan, where thousands of tourists come to pray. Also in the village you can visit one of the most spectacular and abounding waterfalls in Uzbekistan, the 40-meter Suvtushar waterfall.
